About the Hong Kong French Film Festival

As a pioneer of Hong Kong’s film festivals, Alliance Française de Hong Kong has screened over 1,600 acclaimed French films since 1953. The 48th edition will continue to bring the latest and best of French Cinema to Hong Kong film lovers.

How Did it Start?

Alliance Française de Hong Kong has been committed to the promotion of French cinema since its very inception; when it was established in 1953, the very first French Film Festival was also organised. That 1953 edition was the pioneering film festival in Hong Kong, making it the oldest celebration of film in the city. Since then, the festival has always brought the latest French films to Hong Kong..

More than 47 Editions of the Festival

Since 1972, Alliance Française de Hong Kong has collaborated with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), and made the film festival an annual event. Thus far, the festival has screened more than 1,600 French films, attracted a diversified audience, ranging from cinema lovers to the general public, and even some Hong Kong artists and directors who have had their first exposure to French cinema through the festival.

Dynamism, Diversity and Quality

The festival always promotes and accompanies the evolution of the French cinema, including the prominent and influential New Wave movement. Each festival has been a new challenge for the team to continuously bring to the Hong Kong audience different facets of French cinema. From the debuting works of directors to multi-awarded movies, the festival programme illustrates the full depth of French cinema and has made French films accessible to Hong Kong.

The Festival Attracts the Stars

Over the years, many French actors and directors have been joining the celebrations of the festival and met Hong Kong audience through Q&A or press conferences: from the recently invited guests Daniel & Emmanuel Leconte (Je suis Charlie), Nicolas Saada (Taj Mahal), Gaspard Ulliel (Saint Laurent), Frédéric Chau, Phillipe de Chauveron (Serial Bad Weddings), Abdellatif Kechiche (Blue is the Warmest Colour – Palme d’Or to the iconic Pierre Richard, Miu Miu, Gérard Jugnot, Matthieu Kassovitz, Cédric Klapish, Isabelle Huppert, Olivier Assayas and many mores.

The Organisations Behind the Festival

The festival is passionately created and presented by Alliance Française de Hong Kong, the city’s French language and cultural centre since 1953. Nonetheless, the festival would not be a success without the support of many other organisations, such as LCSD, UniFrance, the French Consulate, local theaters, film distributors, sponsors and many other partners.
